See the piercing before the needle

A piercing is the one bit of jewellery you cannot take back off and think about. respecced shows you studs, hoops, a stacked ear, a nose stud or a septum ring on your own face first, and it will try a particular pair of earrings or a necklace from a shop photo too.

The decision you cannot undo

Everything else in the catalogue is reversible. A haircut grows, a dress goes back, a pair of trainers gets resold. A second and third hole in your ear does not, and a septum ring is a fortnight of healing before you even know whether you like it on your face.

Seeing it first is worth more here than anywhere else, and it costs a photograph. An ear stack in particular is a decision people make one hole at a time over years without ever having seen where it ends up; this puts the finished thing on your own ear in twelve seconds.

Trying a specific piece

Two presets take a photograph: "try these earrings" and "try this necklace". Save the picture from the shop page, or photograph the piece in the case while you are standing at the counter, and it goes on you rather than on the model it was shot on.

That is the same bargain the clothing and trainer try-ons make, and it matters for the same reason: a pair of drop earrings photographed on a model with a different neck, different hair and different colouring tells you almost nothing about how they will sit on you.

One thing changes, and only one

The instruction for this category is unusually strict about leaving everything else alone. One item appears or changes and nothing else does: not your hair, not your skin, not your face, not the neckline of what you are wearing.

There is also a "remove jewellery" preset, which goes the other way and takes the existing pieces out. It is the quickest way to see a bare ear before deciding what to put in it, and it is useful on a photograph where you were wearing something that is not what you are shopping for.

What the photo needs

Face on, decent light, and the ears visible. That last one is the whole job: hair over your ears means there is nothing for an earring to sit on, and the model cannot move your hair to make room without breaking the rule that the hair does not change.

Tuck it back before you take the picture. For a nose stud or a septum ring, straight on is better than three-quarter, because the piece sits on the centre line of your face and that is where it reads.

How it works

1. Upload a photo

A selfie is enough. Face on, decent light, everyday clothes. Software screens it before anything happens; no person sees it.

2. Tap what to change

Pick from presets. There is nothing to type and nothing to learn.

3. See it in seconds

Slide between before and after, keep what you like, stack another change, download.

Questions

Can I try a specific pair of earrings from a shop?

Yes. "Try these earrings" takes the listing photo or your own picture of the pair and puts that pair on you.

Does it change anything else about my face?

No. One piece appears or changes; your hair, skin, face and clothes are left exactly as they were.

My hair covers my ears. Will it work?

No. Tuck your hair back before taking the photo. The hair cannot be moved to make room, because hair is not allowed to change on this preset.

Can it take my existing jewellery out?

Yes, that is what "Remove jewellery" is for, and it is a good starting point before trying something else.

Is it free?

Yes, to start with. You get a few free respecs on your first visit with no account and no card; after that you buy credits or subscribe.

Want to try it on yourself?
